PHOTOS OF THE MONTH
Back in early December our local rocket club, Birmingham Rocket Boys NAR 665 was asked to assist a local TV production company
by building and flying rockets for a commercial they were doing for a local restaurant chain, Jack's.
We hope you enjoy a few photos from behind the scenes.
It takes a lot of people and equipment to make a commercial.
The rocket of choice was the wildly popular, Red Max and in 2 sizes, with a back up for both. The larger ones flew on a G
Of course, these days, you need a drone for aerial shots.
Club president, Ron Dunn, is hooking up the leads just before launch as the mom and daughter get last minute instructions
from the director.
As you might imagine, there are always distractions. This is the first rocket launch I have attended that had a train run
I guess the engineer was equally surprised as he happened upon a rocket launch in the middle of the country side.
Final instructions given; we're ready to launch!
Now, with the drone overhead, we see your average mom and daughter out enjoying an afternoon launch.
You can't see it very well here but the little girl's eyes and the excitement on her face were incredible!
Houston, Der Red Max has landed!
A high five...
...And a hug for the team, and it turns out to be a great day for the girls out flying!
When I heard the club had been asked to help with the commercial, that was pretty cool, but over the years we've been
on TV many times, held large launches, helped with many projects like TARC, USLI and in many classrooms. What made this event
extra special for me was seeing the scenario of a mom and her daughter out flying, used as routine main stream advertising.
If you're old enough, like me, you might remember the old Virginia Slims cigarette commercial jingle; "You've come
a long way baby!"
Go rocket babes!
